🗓 [PLUS] A Timeline of the Chaos at OpenAI

If you haven’t heard, there’s been widespread chaos at OpenAI headquarters over the past week. Here’s a timeline of the key events you need to know:

  1. Nov 18 - Just a little more than a week after OpenAI’s Dev Day, the board fired CEO Sam Altman over a claimed breakdown in communications.

The next day, Greg Brockman also stepped down from his role as chairman of the board while retaining his role in the company.

Subsequently, company investors and employees pushed to reinstate Altman and Brockman.

  2. Nov 19 - Sam Altman arrived at OpenAI HQ, indicating talks of rehiring him were underway.

  3. Nov 20 - In a sudden twist, Microsoft hired Altman to lead a new advanced AI research team under a CEO Title.

  4. Nov 21 - 667 OpenAI employees issued an ultimatum to the board. They demanded all board members step down from their positions or risk a majority of employees moving to Sam Altman’s new venture at Microsoft.

  5. Currently: It appears that Altman’s move to Microsoft is not official, with the ex-CEO still considering returning to his position at OpenAI.

At the same time OpenAI’s board has approached the CEO of rival company Anthropic to pitch a merger.

Keep an eye out for updates unfolding over the next couple days. These events may play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI. 💭
