Hi friends, welcome back to Cloudbites

Today, I’ll be sharing some tips to prepare for your AWS Cloud Support Engineer technical interview. I’ll also share some resources to support your Cloud learning journey, as well as the updated object segmentation model by Meta.

🤓 How to Ace the AWS Cloud Support Engineer Interviews

Cloud Support Engineers at AWS have a solid understanding of AWS services.

They’re also expected to remain composed under pressure to resolve issues quickly, and to be experts in troubleshooting.

In the application process, the technical interview is one of the most key components because it assesses your ability to apply AWS services and provide technical support for AWS customers.

The technical interview itself will evaluate your technical knowledge, troubleshooting and scripting skills, and role-related responsibilities. 

#1 Technical Knowledge

Before the interview, I’d recommend refreshing your knowledge on AWS services, such as AWS Lambda and S3, and cloud computing concepts including security, scalability, etc. 

This step is important to surround yourself with the basic concepts and theories before you apply them in practice.

Sample Question: What are the best practices of securing Relational Database Service (RDS) databases?

#2 Troubleshooting

You might also be asked to solve several hypothetical customer issues during the interview. 

Honing your ability to analyze log files, identify and investigate possible root causes, and propose solutions using AWS tools will help you prepare. 

It’s also a good idea to practice effective communication since you’ll explain your decision-making process to the hiring managers.

Sample Question: Imagine a scenario where a customer reports that their EC2 instance is unreachable. Walk me through the steps you would take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

#3 Scripting

In some cases, the hiring managers will even ask about your experience with scripting languages and automation tools (e.g. AWS CLI) to increase efficiency.

If you’re not yet proficient with scripting, you can practice writing scripts for common tasks first, such as automating backups or processing data.

Once you feel more comfortable, you can start developing scripts to automate routine tasks, like automating the creation of EC2 instances, RDS databases, and other AWS resources.

Sample Question: Can you provide an example of a situation where you used scripting to automate operations in a Cloud environment?

#4 Role-Related Responsibilities

Hiring managers would also like to know the level of commitment and preparation you’ve done to become an AWS Cloud Support Engineer. 

Several scenario-based questions will be asked to assess your suitability with Amazon’s Leadership Principles and potential to contribute to AWS’ growth.

Whenever possible, mention examples of challenging situations in which you managed to resolve and your learning experience out of it.

Sample Question: Describe how you would handle a customer inquiry regarding an issue with their AWS billing and cost management?

💼 Sample Technical Interview Questions

Here are some more sample questions that hiring managers might ask you in an AWS Cloud Support Engineer interview.

Troubleshooting:

  1. How would you diagnose and resolve latency issues in an AWS-based application?

  2. What steps would you take to troubleshoot a failed EC2 instance launch?

Scripting:

  1. How would you use AWS CLI or SDKs to automate common AWS tasks?

  2. Write a script to monitor and alert for high CPU utilization on EC2 instances.

Networking:

  1. How do you troubleshoot a connectivity issue between an EC2 instance and an RDS database?

  2. Describe how to troubleshoot DNS resolution issues in AWS.

Note: The topics asked will depend on the Cloud Support Engineer role you’re applying for (e.g. Specialist vs. Generalist Solutions Architect).

🤫 PLUS: Meta’s Breakthrough in Real-Time Object Segmentation
