Hi friends, welcome back to Cloudbites. Today, I’ll be sharing everything you need to know about the Cloud Support Engineer role. I’ll also be diving into the top cloud skill I’d recommend learning this year.

👷‍♂️ What is a Cloud Support Engineer?

With more businesses migrating their platforms to the cloud, there is growing demand for product support and troubleshooting. To address this, AWS created the Cloud Support Engineer Role - to assist customers with their day-to-day issues.

  • What Does a Cloud Support Engineer Actually Do?

A Cloud Support Engineer is a role that focuses on providing guidance to customers when they face technical issues.

This could include: how to use a specific cloud service, or troubleshooting an application error.

  • What are their roles and responsibilities?

On a day-to-day basis, Engineers solve customer issues via email, chats or calls.

They typically specialize in a specific domain - like networking, security or databases, and solve questions related to it.

While this is their main responsibility, Cloud Engineers are also encouraged to continuously improve their technical skills by teaching others. For example, a Cloud Engineer may be responsible for developing & presenting a training session or creating a how-to video for the developer community.

Alternatively, if the Cloud Engineer has a bit more experience, they  may be involved in the hiring process, or in mentoring new employees.

💭 How Do I Know if this Role is Right For Me?

If you’re thinking of becoming a Cloud Engineer, but wondering if the role is for you, here are some things to consider:

  1. Do you prioritize seeing the immediate impact of your work? If so, this role is great for you. Cloud Support Engineers focus more on solving daily, tactical problems.

  2. Do you like variety in your work? Then this role may be the perfect fit. Cloud Engineers are faced with many different types of issues each day and gain a lot of exposure.

  3. Do you enjoy continuous learning? In that case, this role aligns well with your interests. Engineers are expected to be up-to-date with the new features and services coming out. You’ll always be learning either structured or unstructured content.

  4. Do you want to get into the industry fast? If yes, this role might be the best match. The high demand for this role can mean it's easier to get into than other roles in the industry.
